We all know that Oakland has a thriving, long running punk scene. Well did you know there’s a healthy folk community there too? Winnie Byrd and Glass Cake are certainly at the forefront of that. I played a Blanket Truth show with both of them around Christmastime 2009 at Michelle (Glass Cake)’s house and it was a blast.

Winnie Byrd is the side project of Davyd Nereo of Beatbeat Whisper, a carefully crafted sibling folk duo. It differs from Beatbeat Whisper by bouncing around through folk pop, country twang, and classical baroque.

Glass Cake writes some seriously heartbreaking yet catchy and uplifting songs. Her voice makes you feel like you’re riding a rollercoaster that hits a dip in the track. Recommended for fans of Watercolor Paintings. It’s no coincidence Michelle Shofet of Glass Cake and Rebecca Redman of Watercolor Paintings are in Girl Band together along with Mallory Watje of Mammary.

First edition of 100 copies, with digital download, hand stamped covers and full color labels on clear purple tapes. Cover illustration by Jeff Stratford.
